Tolerances & keyway at Ünsal Makina

The margin of error that does not hinder the construction and operation of a part is called tolerance. Even if the machine, control tools and operator used in the production of these parts are the same, small differences in dimensions are observed. The reason for these differences is; It may be caused by many variables such as temperature, humidity, dust, raw material quality, machine, cutting tools, operator. It is very difficult to keep all of these variables under control in the same way. Additionally, trying to machine a part to full size may lead to unnecessary costs. Because all machine elements are designed according to certain tolerances.



While some of the parts may be desired to fit with a gap, others may want to fit tightly. This varies depending on system requirements. One of the pairs of machine elements that work with tight fit and gap fit logic are keyways and keyways.

Wedge; pulley, gear wheel, coupling etc. They are the connection elements of the machine part with the shafts. They act as intermediaries in transmitting the rotary motion from the machine parts to the shaft and the rotary movement in the shaft to the machines. (1) Wedges; They are standardized in several main groups: flat, half-moon and circular.

The dimensions of flat wedges are determined according to DIN 6885, and the dimensions of circular half-moon wedges are determined according to DIN 6888 standard. (2) Specially designed keyways may not be worked according to these standards. Wedge dimensions; It is named by width, height and length measurements. The keyway length should be less than approximately 1.5 times the shaft diameter to ensure good load distribution and torque transmission. (3)

Details should be carefully examined to evaluate the keyway and its suitability. Because the use of wedges has many advantages but also disadvantages. To mention some of them:


Advantages:

Low production costs

They are well standardized (ISO, BS, DIN and ANSI)

High torque transmission due to design

They are easy to attach and remove


Disadvantages:

Not suitable for variable directional loads and shocks

Possible axial displacement unless locked with an extra component such as a set screw or circlip.

It creates a stress point and reduces strength due to the notch effect (4)
